The 4 thermistor temperature reading and logging via EID's universal serial bus (EUSB) is an educational electronics kit. It allows you to connect your personal computer (PC) universal serial port (USB) to the kit on one side, and up to 4 NTC thermistor on the other side. Together with the our free (AS-IS) demo software, you will be able to read and log to file temperatures. The thermistor temperature will display on screen in degrees C, F or K. Additionally, you will be able to set the log interval and log the information to file. Our sophisticated software logging Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) mechanism allows you to open the logged file with another program, such as spreadsheet (MS-Excel etc.), at the same time. Therefore, you will be able to easily share the file, and view it from anywhere on the web, and print report or graph from your familiar existing software packages.

 

This kit uses 12 bits Analog to digital converter (ADC) integrated circuit (IC) component. The MAX1236 (Maxim Inc, www.maxim-ic.com ) is mounted in a SMT method on the bottom side. (SMT = Surface Mounted Technology).

 

This ADC component has a built-in reference voltage and internal clock. The device is controlled via 2 wires, Clock and Data (I2C protocol). 

 

The kit is based on Cypress integrated circuit (IC), the CY7C63001.

 

Note: The CY7C63001 IC is Universal Serial Bus (USB) RISC type Micro-controller. It conforms to USB 1.5 Mbps specification, version 1.1. See USB specifications at www.usb.org for more details, or click here to download the the CY7C630s01 chip data-sheet.

 

No need for external Power supply! The board is powered directly from your PC.

Calculating the thermistor temperature:

 

The thermistor resistance (R) should be obtained at given temperature by the software utilizing voltage divider.

 

It will than past throw the software Steinhart-Hart thermistor equation, and will display on the screen.

 

Note: You can use any NTC sensor on the market just set the configuration screen with your new Voltage and reference resistor and your thermistor coefficients. The 10K, 1%, 1/4W reference resistor come with the kit.

 

The Steinhart-Hart thermistor equation is derived from mathematical curve-fitting techniques and examination of the resistance versus temperature characteristics of thermistor devices.

 

Where T is the temperature in Kelvin (note: 0°C = 273.15K), and A, B, and C are constant factors for the thermistor that is being molded.

 

Steinhart-Hart Equation:

 

T = 1 / {A + B[ln(R)] + C[ln(R)]^3}

A = 0.001129148 

B = 0.000234125 

C = 8.76741E-08


Please be advised, the coefficients A, B, and C are constant factors of the individual thermistor. The above coefficients are given for 10K @ 25C thermistor from Betatherm , Inc. MA, USA.

 

Finally, you will be able to view the temperatures results in degrees Kelvin, Centigrade or Fahrenheit 

 

The basic temperature formulas are given below:

 

C = K – 273.15

 

F = C * 1.8 + 32
